2.3.1 What Is Page Experience?
Page experience is a set of signals — including Core Web Vitals (CWVs), mobile-friendliness, HTTPS and intrusive interstitial guidelines — that Google uses to extrapolate user experience on a website.
Page experience is an evaluation of a site’s performance rather than its content. While Google still prioritizes content relevance when answering user queries, page experience is effectively a tie breaker when several sites offer a similar level of coverage.
The four page experience signals are:
- Core Web Vitals (CWVs)
- Mobile-friendliness
- HTTPS
- No intrusive interstitials
What Are Core Web Vitals (CWVs)?
CWVs measure user experience by focusing on how quickly a page loads, its responsiveness to user input and also its visual stability. There are three metrics for this:
- Largest Content Paint (LCP): This is the time difference between when a page starts to load and when the largest text or image visible above the fold is fully loaded. Google recommends an LCP of no longer than 2.5 seconds.
- First Input Delay (FID): This measures the time between a user clicking a link and the moment the browser begins processing the page’s event handlers. Google recommends an FID of no more than 100 milliseconds.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): This measures how often a page’s visible layout shifts during a user’s time on page. Layout shifts, which are not uncommon, occur as a result of images, videos, APIs or third-party content reacting unexpectedly to a real-time environment. Google recommends having a maximum CLS score of 0.1.
